ASICS reveals Gel-Lyte III CM 1.95, the sneaker with the lowest CO2e emission

ASICS’ new sneaker releases only 1.95kg of CO2e emissions in production

ASICS recently unveiled its most innovative and lowest-impact sneaker on the environment: the Gel-Lyte III CM 1.95. The production of the new shoe, in fact, involves the emission of only 1.95kg of CO2e. This is the result of as much as 10 years of study and work, as well as an important step toward a net-zero future by 2050. Research has led to the discovery of all the polluting factors in the life stages of a shoe, and that is where the Japanese company has acted.

New technologies include the foam, midsole, and carbon negative insole; these, are made through a fusion of biobased polymers derived in part from sugarcane. The upper and footbed, on the other hand, are made from recycled and solution-dyed polyester. In addition, Gel-Lyte III CM 1.95 has a new structure that uses a tape to reduce the use of materials and harnesses 100 percent renewable energy in manufacturing.

Minako Yoshikawa, Senior General Manager ASICS Sustainability Division says, “We have long been committed at ASICS to exploring and testing more sustainable ways to reduce our impact on the planet. Although the Gel-Lyte III CM 1.95 represents an extremely significant milestone in this journey, this is only the beginning. Our ambition is to continue to apply the lessons learned and to develop the design of this shoe so that we can roll it out on an even larger scale in the future.”

During the footwear presentation there was also an opportunity to engage with Yasuhito Hirota, CEO of ASICS. Mr. Hirota says, “ASICS is founded on the belief in the uplifting power of sports on the mind. That is why we are committed to doing our part to ensure a better future for our planet. In this way we can ensure that future generations can continue to experience the positive impact of sports on the mind. To achieve a Healthy Soul In Corpore Sano, you need a healthy Earth on which to move. The road ahead may still be complex, but the Gel-Lyte III CM 1.95 is our latest statement of intent on this journey. We hope it will help inspire real positive change in the sports industry to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.”
