CAI Eagle Team, Matteo Della Bordella’s project for young mountaineers

A project for young mountaineers designed by Matteo Della Bordella together with the Italian Alpine Club and the Academic Alpine Club.

To pass on to young people the technical knowledge and cultural heritage that are fundamental to anyone aspiring to become an interpreter of modern mountaineering. To promote the development of mountaineering practice among younger people by offering a select group of talents the opportunity to be able to express themselves to the fullest on the world’s most beautiful mountains. These are the goals of the “Cai Eagle Team”, a project conceived by mountaineer Matteo Della Bordella together with the Italian Alpine Club and the Italian Academic Alpine Club, which aims to select twelve young people (girls and boys) between the ages of 18 and 28, offering them the opportunity to carry out an experience under the guidance of some of the best Italian and international mountaineers.

The ultimate goal? To become excellent mountaineers, but also to earn their place in the group that will participate in the 2025 International Mountaineering Expedition funded by the Italian Alpine Club to Patagonia, along with Matteo Della Bordella and two other experienced mountaineers. The project “Cai Eagle Team”, in fact, plans, between April 2023 and December 2024, six weeks of activities in various parts of the Alps (from the Grigna to the Dolomites, from Mont Blanc to the Orco Valley, and on to the Bernese Oberland), focusing on climbing (rock, ice and mixed, and crack), mountaineering, and eventual route opening.

At the end of the weeks, members of the non-European expedition will be selected based on technical/mountaineering, character and logistical skills. Six young people will have access to it, with the goal of making prestigious climbs in Patagonia in February 2025. Each of the six weeks will include theoretical meetings to go along with the practice of the specific activity planned, as well as in-depth historical/cultural and broad topics such as risk management and safety, and a focus on the link between mountaineering and communication. The twelve participants will be selected on a curricular basis and through a two-day mountaineering skills test scheduled for late March in Piedmont, Val D’Ossola. There is time to apply until March 15, 2023. Interested parties can find all the information on how to apply in the appropriate section of the cai.it website.
