The athlete-engineer and the French brand join forces to redefine the future of trail running through elite performance and accessible innovation

The trail running market has accustomed us to big surprises, but the announcement of Mathieu Blanchard joining the KIPRUN family raises the bar far beyond a simple sponsorship deal. We aren’t just talking about an athlete capable of dominating the Diagonale des Fous in 2024 or triumphing in the ice of the Yukon Arctic Ultra in 2025; we are looking at a strategic addition that aims to disrupt how we conceive ultra-distance gear. Blanchard isn’t your typical runner who simply “flies” along the trails: with a solid background in engineering, he brings a technical analytical capacity that is incredibly rare among the leaders of international competitions. This dual soul of athlete and technician is the core of a three-year project that aims to transform elite innovation into a reality accessible to every runner, regardless of their level.
For KIPRUN, welcoming a figure of this caliber means consolidating a leading position on the world stage, leveraging the experience of someone who has stood on the podiums of the UTMB and the Hardrock 100 to validate their products in the most brutal conditions on the planet. But the real challenge for Mathieu won’t just be crossing prestigious finish lines; it will be getting his hands dirty in the creative process. By actively entering into co-creation, Blanchard will provide his methodological rigor to refine testing protocols and develop materials capable of withstanding the most hostile expeditions, from Alpine altitudes to Arctic environments. It is the philosophy of democratizing performance: the idea that if a technical solution works to win the toughest races in the world, it must be able to offer concrete benefits, safety, and comfort even to the trail runner heading out for a Sunday run behind their house.
During his immersion phase with the brand, Mathieu was struck by the group’s research and development facilities, where climate and biomechanical simulation allow for anticipating runners’ needs before they even set foot on the trail. In this ecosystem, performance is not seen as an individual goal, but as a collective work built on humility, boldness, and sharing. The partnership between the French athlete and the brand born within Decathlon comes at a crucial moment, marking a trajectory where exploration, engineering, and sporting ambition converge. The final goal is as ambitious as a hundred-miler: to leave a lasting mark on the sport, proving that the most advanced technology shouldn’t remain a privilege for the few, but a tool to allow anyone to continue their journey, kilometer after kilometer.
