Filip Babicz is the first in the world to solo “Appointment with Death”

Filip Babicz writes a new page in the history of Italian and international climbing.

Mountaineer and climber Filip Babicz has completed the extremely hard and terrifying route “Appointment with Death” in England. This legendary British Gritstone route is in fact rated E9 6c. “The appointment” for Filip Babicz was instead with history and the Polish-born athlete managed to become the fifth man in the world, as well as the first non-English to complete the climb.

A double feat for Babicz because, unlike his predecessors, Filip completed the route solo, without a belayer at the base, without using a crash pad (the protective mattress) and insuring himself. This is the first time in history.

Italy thus conquers one of the most iconic, dangerous and feared routes in the world, a symbol for all climbers on the planet. Only other trad climbing specialists such as Randall, Lee and Pope had managed to challenge “Rendezvous with Death”.

“I am really proud and excited to have passed Appointment with Death. It is a very hard climb and doing it alone made everything even more difficult and to the limit” said Filip Babicz at the end of the feat.
