Hervé Bermasse aims for the highest peak of Nanga Parbat

The three mountaineers of The North Face Global Team will attempt the summit in one of the most adverse seasons.

Hervé Barmasse will attempt the winter ascent of Nanga Parbat, aiming directly at the summit of Rupal. Together with mountaineers David Göttler and Mike Arnold, the three will attempt to climb the world’s largest wall (4,500 metres) of one of the highest mountains on the planet (8,126 metres) between 10 and 20 January.

The ascent is expected to be minimal: 15 kilos of equipment and 60 metres of rope for an expedition that is a far cry from Himalayan-style climbing.
“We will climb in perfect alpine style,” explains Barmasse, “so no rubbish left on the mountain, no pre-set camps, no outside help, no oxygen or fixed ropes. And this is because the way we want to do things is more important than the summit we want to reach”.

An expedition that was created to tackle and try to overcome its own limits and that seeks the true essence of mountaineering in its methods, not so much in its objectives.

The three mountaineers of The North Face Global Team will be followed daily by Gazzetta dello Sport with a diary that will be updated by Barmasse himself directly from the base camp of Nanga Barmat at 3,500 metres.
