Komoot launches Trail View, new technology that brings maps to life

Trail View was born out of Komoot’s desire to empower its users to more accurately assess the tours they are about to take through real photographs.

Komoot recently launched a new proprietary technology, Trail View. Supported by artificial intelligence, it is responsible for recognizing images uploaded by the community to accurately report the conditions and nature of the trails. In this way, enthusiasts will be able to plan even more precisely which tour to take according to their abilities and type of sport.

Jonas Spengler, CTO of Komoot, said, “Komoot aims to find innovative ways to improve the experience of those in the outdoors by using the potential and knowledge of our community of outdoor enthusiasts. Trail View is a great example of how innovation and artificial intelligence intersect for better and safer adventure planning.”

Trail View does not accept all photos: it first analyzes the images, as a result only those related to trails are shown. The evaluation criteria include faces, animals, landscapes, and buildings, and photos that do not meet them are deleted.

For the launch of the new technology, more than 15 million images uploaded to Komoot by the community were automatically scanned: of these, about 1 million were identified as showing trails and paths.
