Leather Matter: Hanwag leather shoes from 100% European supply chain

Selected from premium suppliers and 100% made in EU, Hanwag leather creates sturdy and resilient shoes, ideal companions for year-round mountain outings.

Natural, inimitable and versatile: it may seem surprising, but despite continuous technological progress, leather remains the best material to make quality mountaineering and hiking shoes. As well as being aesthetically pleasing and pleasant to the touch, leather is also an extremely durable material and, if properly maintained, can last practically forever.

Building on its almost century-old shoe making tradition, Hanwag devotes maniacal attention to the selection of materials with which it produces its shoes. This also applies, of course, to all leather that the Bavarian company in Vierkirchen uses to develop its new models and technologies.

Hanwag uses a total of six main types of leather in its production, each from different suppliers: nubuck leather, split leather, lining leather, yak leather, chrome-free tanned leather and Terracare Zero, the totally CO2-neutral leather made by the German tannery Heinen.

In order to keep production as sustainable as possible, Hanwag has selected a totally in-house supply chain for its leather: from the raw material, through the tanning process in the Leather Working Group’s top tanneries, to the final production of the famous mountaineering and hiking shoes. The only exception is the valuable yak leather, for which Hanwag collaborates with selected tanneries based in Tibet.

Selected from premium suppliers and 100% made in EU, Hanwag leather creates sturdy, soluble shoes that are ideal companions for year-round mountain tours. The quality leather, in fact, allows the boot to adapt perfectly to the shape of the foot, regulates the temperature, allows sweat to escape, is waterproof if treated properly and keeps its shape for a long time.
