Polartec & National Geographic

Polartec’s owners are joining forces with National Geographic to advance the debate and research on plastics.

Milliken & Company, owners of Polartec, an innovative textile technology brand, are proud to announce their partnership with National Geographic to “launch a partnership and inspire innovation for sustainability and the future of a circular economy.

Beginning with sponsorship of National Geographic’s recent Circular Economy Forum, the collaboration opened last month at its Washington DC headquarters. The Forum was attended by 400 people, and another 500 connected via live streaming.

Milliken, a textile manufacturer that acquired Polartec in 2019, has a 154-year history in environmental protection, which continues to be committed to protecting and preserving the planet for future generations.

Its sustainability goals for 2025 include the promise of: “convene scientists and thought leaders to promote the goal of finding a solution to the plastics challenge at the end of their life cycle”.

As is now widely known, Polartec is the first inventor of a fleece fabric made from recycled plastic bottles, reallocating 1.5 billion disposable plastic bottles to landfill. And this number is constantly growing. In addition, 95% of leftovers and scraps are converted and often transformed into furniture, insulation materials and even horseshoes.
