PrimaLoft brings aeronautical technology into outwear products

PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Aerogel provides excellent protection against the effects of heat and cold on hands, feet and technical clothing.

PrimaLoft’s materials science experts have combined ultra-lightness and extreme porosity of Aerogel – used for space exploration – with PrimaLoft technology, creating a usable combination in the textile industry. The result is a highly effective insulation, able to protect from extreme heat or cold even when compressed. Today this innovation is used above all in footwear and gloves.

PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Aerogel provides comfort in extreme weather conditions, as it protects from the harshest and highest temperatures. This is possible thanks to millions of small air chambers that form a thermal block by closing the excess of the surrounding prohibitive temperatures outside. Integrated into shoes and gloves, PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Airgel performs optimally even under pressure.

Laboratory tests demonstrate that with PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Aerogel the inner soles keep the foot warm around 14°C in extreme cold conditions (-78°C), and at 10°C in unbearable hot conditions (60°C ) compared to the previous PrimaLoft insulation for footwear. In addition to being durable it is highly flexible, waterproof and extremely light.

Aerogel is composed of 95% of air, making it one of the lightest solids in the world, as well as one of the most effective insulating materials ever. A highly porous low density structure forms a barrier that blocks the most annoying temperatures, in extreme heat or cold.

For the 2018/2019 winter season, PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Aerogel is used in the hot Reush Volcano Pro GTX Mitten glove, in a variety of 42 Helly Hansen jackets, where it is used as a Life Pocket to protect technical material from the cold, and in the boot touring shoes Merrell Thermo Rogue awarded with the ISPO Award 2018. Other brands include Outdoor Research, Viking and Viking footwear
