Discovering the Hoka Monterosa East Himalayan Trail

At the Kongresshaus of Macugnaga was presented the III Hoka Monterosa Est Himalayan Trail that will be run on July 17-18, 2021. Illustrated the news and the Covid protocols for the development of this spectacular event that involves the community of Macugnaga and the entire Anzasca Valley.

It’s almost time for the departure of the fearless and indomitable athletes who will face the east face of Monte Rosa participating in the Meht, the III Hoka Monte Rosa Est Himalayan Trail!

It’s back to racing, in 2020 the event due to Covid19 had not been organized, but the call of these fabulous mountains is something too strong to give up and the primary objective of Sport Pro-Motion A.S.D. through the Meht is to make known a very special territory.

The event takes its name from the east wall of Monte Rosa, the highest in the Alps and the only Himalayan type of geomorphology in Europe. It has a drop of 2,600 meters for a total width of almost 4 km and is located in the territory of the municipality of Macugnaga, at the end of the Anzasca Valley, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (Piedmont). From the village you can see a large section, particularly impressive for the vastness of the size and the close distance. Together with the Valsesia wall of Monte Rosa, it constitutes the Piedmontese side of the group, as opposed to the Aosta Valley and Switzerland.

Distances

There are five races and distances in the program to satisfy all athletes, from those who will try their hand at the most arduous undertaking to those who want to have a less demanding experience or to family members who will have the opportunity to experience the territory in absolute freedom and safety. All events will start and finish at the Sports Centre of Pecetto di Macugnaga.

The big news is the distance ‘increased’, born Ultra 105K/8,000 D +, the ultra distance for athletes technically prepared with departure at 4:00 am on Saturday, July 17, path to be completed in a maximum of 36h with 8000m D + and the highest point at P.so of Monte Moro (2,868m). To register, athletes must have acquired 3 ITRA Points in a single race held from January 01, 2018 to December 31, 2020. Details and track HERE.

Slightly less challenging is the Epic 60K/4,700 D+. The athletes will start at 5:00 am on Saturday 17 and will reach the highest point at the Monte Moro Pass (2,868m) going to complete within 18h the 4,700m D+ overall. A very technical route with great emotions and great as a training for the big ultratrail autumn.

Shorter and very challenging in terms of altitude is the Sky 38K / 3,100 D + that will start at 6:00 am and will take athletes to reach the highest point in Passo Monte Moro (2,868 m) and complete the course within 12.5h with 3,100 m D +. The route is very technical and allows you to enjoy the ‘grandeur of the “4,000 Swiss”. For the 60K and 38K races it is advisable to have participated in at least one trail race of at least 40 Km and 2.500 D+ in an alpine environment.

Definitely more affordable is the Challenge 22K/1.700 D+ that will start at 8:30 am on Saturday 17 and will take the athletes to complete the 1.700m D+ in 7.5h. The athletes will reach the highest point at the Funivia Rosareccio (1,187m) and will pass at the foot of the east face of Monte Rosa, an exciting view on real mountain trails.

Closing the ranks the athletes of the Short 14K/850 D+ that will start at 9:00 am on Saturday 17 with 5h to complete the 850m D+ and will reach the highest point at Alpe Bletz (1.714m). The route is also suitable for those with little experience and allows you to enjoy the history and beauty of the Walser village Macugnaga from all angles.
