Fjällräven Expedition Series: the new collection

Fjällräven Expedition Series: from an icon from 1974, the new winter jacket collection for outdoor enthusiasts!

Fjällräven presents Expedition Series, a collection of jackets inspired by the legendary 1974 Expedition Down Jacket. The new series consists of three shorter, lighter, more compressible models and a long, padded parka, suitable for periods when temperatures drop.

During an expedition in the early 1970s, on the desolate Abisko plateau in the far north of Sweden, Fjällräven founder Åke Nordin had dug a bivouac, a simple pit in the snow, to get through an unbearably cold and windy night. The bitter cold was what Åke loved least about his outdoor adventures. So he began to think about the possibility of inventing a jacket with which he would never have to feel cold again.

The result was Expedition Down Jacket, a jacket made with two down jackets sewn together to minimise heat loss. After rigorous field tests, the product was launched on the market in 1974 and soon became a must-have for outdoor professionals around the world, from Himalayan climbers to Arctic Circle sled dog handlers.

Four new models

Today, Fjällräven pays tribute to the legendary Expedition Down Jacket and presents Expedition Series, the new winter jacket collection that offers unparalleled protection from the cold and offers high-level features and functionality based on 60 years of outdoor experience. The series consists of three lighter and more compressible models, which can be used both as a midlayer during cold winter hikes and as a padded shoulder cover during the warmer months. The fourth model is a long, well-padded parka, suitable for periods when temperatures drop sharply. The colours are bright and decisive, with iconic details that wink at the original ’74 model.

Sustainability at the highest levels

All jackets in the new series use 100% recycled nylon for both the outer fabric and the inner lining. The feather padded models use only traceable down certified Down Promise down. Particular attention has also been paid to the possibility to repair the garments. “Sustainability is a top priority for Fjällräven, so we worked hard to make sure that the new Expedition Series lives up to expectations,” explains James Lee, designer of the collection. “From the very beginning, studying the margins for repairability of a garment means creating garments and equipment that will last for generations. And this, for us, is one of the fundamental aspects of sustainability”.
