Helly Hansen presents Mono Material: 100% recyclable

Mono Material, the new 100% recyclable urban-outdoor insulators. Made of 100% polyester and 100% recyclable, Helly Hansen’s Mono Material synthetic comforters are designed for circular economy.

According to the study A New Textile Economy conducted by the Ellen McArthur Foundation, the clothing industry is among the most polluting on the planet. Among the elements of environmental criticality there is the scarce use of recycled materials for production – the so-called second raw materials – which amount to only 2% of the total. But the recycling of textile products at the end of their life is even lower: only 1% of the materials used to produce new clothing comes from used clothing.

One of the main obstacles to clothing recycling is that jackets, pants and T-shirts are not designed from the start for this purpose. The separation of products that are by their nature complex is made even more difficult by the sophisticated technologies used to produce fabrics from mixed materials. This generates a loss equivalent of about $100 billion a year and makes the goal of a circular apparel economy a distant goal today.
For the autumn/winter 2020/21 season, Helly Hansen presents Mono Material, a mini collection of urban outdoor synthetic down jackets, for use alone or as a midlayer under the waterproof shell. The characteristic of Mono Material garments is not only to use a consistent percentage of recycled materials, but to be designed with the entire life cycle in mind to facilitate the recycling of garments and the realization of a true circular economy.

As the name itself says, each Mono Material product is made from a single material. In this case it is 100% virgin or recycled polyester. This not only makes the recycling process easier but improves the final result, because at the end of the recovery process the mono materials have a higher quality than mixed fibers. Innovative and forward-thinking, Helly Hansen’s Mono Material collection is an important step forward in supporting a circular economy and ultimately reducing waste.
