Mammut receives another award for sustainability

Mammut was awarded the “German Sustainability Project Award 2021”: the circular economy project “Close the Loop” won the award in the category “Processes – Recycling”.

With this innovative initiative, the Swiss outdoor company, in cooperation with Protect our Winters Switzerland (POW), is helping to make mountain sports even more sustainable. Discarded climbing ropes are collected, recycled and given a new life as t-shirts, thus closing the loop. Following the ISPO Award Winner 2021, Mammut‘s circular economy project is thus being awarded a second time, becoming a symbol of both the many years of commitment and the Swiss brand’s significant achievements in sustainability.

Rope production is firmly rooted in Mammut’s DNA and accounts for 13% of Mammut’s carbon footprint, a realization that triggered a fundamental shift. Mammut has decided to combine innovation and sustainability for the benefit of mountain sports by recycling ropes that are no longer in use, thus using resources more sparingly while reducing CO2 emissions. Thanks to this environmentally friendly method of recycling, raw materials are reused and the life of a product changes from linear to cyclical.

The circular economy project “Close the Loop” received the “German Sustainability Project Award 2021” in the category “Processes – Recycling”. The award is given to those who have distinguished themselves through a special commitment to sustainable projects and is therefore an important confirmation of Mammut’s responsible and forward-looking choices.

The “Close the Loop” project is proof that circular economy concepts can also be developed in the outdoor sector. Compared to t-shirts made in the traditional way, the Close the Loop t-shirt saves 67 percent of CO2 emissions: this means, considering the results achieved so far, that the project has saved 5.41 tons of CO2. With the imminent international launch of the pilot project, Mammut is committed to introducing considerable changes in the way the outdoor industry thinks and acts. Alice Martin, Corporate Responsibility Manager and Project Lead of “Close the Loop”, said: “We are very honored to be awarded the “German Sustainability Project Award 2021″, which is further confirmation that we are on the right track. This award unites us and encourages us to continue investing in projects of this kind in the future. We want to engage and inspire our partners and our community, working together to make mountain sports increasingly sustainable.”
