SCARPA Life re-shoes: 1500 pairs of used footwear collected

SCARPA Life Re-Shoes – The LIFE Re-Shoes project, led by.
SCARPA
, aims to revolutionize shoe recycling through a sustainable, circular approach.

SCARPA coordinates an international consortium and recently surpassed the collection goal of 1,500 pairs of used Mojito model shoes. The initiative involves the cooperation of about 250 outlets in Europe that function as collection centers. The goal is to produce 15,000 new pairs of shoes by completely recycling the collected shoe components.

The project introduces a new recovery method for leather footwear, based on the selective dissolution of leather by hydrolysis, with the resulting liquid reused to tan new leather without added chemicals. Other shoe components, such as insoles and soles, are also recycled to create new components with high recycled material content.

The laboratory testing phase, conducted in collaboration with UNIBO and Sciarada Industria Conciaria, has shown promising results. A dedicated plant will be built to carry out the process on an industrial scale. The project receives funding from the European Union’s LIFE program and aims to set new recycling standards in the footwear industry, with the goal of significantly reducing environmental impact, virgin resource use and post-production waste.

Updates on the various stages of the project can be followed through LIFE Re-shoes’ social channels on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, and at https://it.scarpa.com/life-re-shoes
