Mammut Expedition Antarctica

By Silvia Galliani

The Antarctic Peninsula is remote, cold, hostile. Yet, it is also a paradise for all skiing and mountaineering lovers.

Mammut Pro Team Athlete Caro North went to the discovery of this pristine land and its countless snow-covered islands. The mountain guide Guillaume Martina and captain Mark van de Weg were with her, and they talk about their journey to Antarctica in an exclusive four-episode Mammut web series.

The idea to reach Antarctica came from the photographer who accompanied Caro on this adventure, he had already explored those lands in the past and was immediately enchanted by the wild places, remote from any civilization, extremely exciting and attractive.

From the first episode, which went online last December 27th, we have been able to follow Caro, Guillaume and Mark on their journey from Patagonia to the infamous Drake Passage, circumnavigating Cape Horn with a small sailboat, a real challenge as it is one of the most notorious sea passages, renowned for its harsh weather and turbulent waters. 4 or 5 days of sailing away from the mainland, without knowing what is going on, a fierce and impressive experience. The weather forecasts must be carefully studied and planned, but there is always a veil of uncertainty linked to being completely exposed to the might of the sea. The sailing boat was like a nutshell being tossed up and down on the waves, but perhaps in this lies its extreme beauty.

We then followed them as they finally landed in Antarctica, a completely different environment from what can be found elsewhere.

For weeks, they saw only white, blue and gray. There were no colors. And, other than research stations, there is no civilization. You are extremely far away from the mainland and completely reliant on your own resources. The landscapes are wild and harsh, the glaciers, crevasses and snowdrifts are wild and enormous. There is little information and few maps and the weather can change from one minute to the next.

We saw Caro, Guillaume and Mark enjoy breathtaking ski ascents and descents followed by icy storms with roaring waves and minimal visibility. Then ice climbing on rock and ice formations. We followed them in a month of absolutely incredible impressions, experiences and feelings that leave vivid and indelible memories.
