PrimaLoft: revolutionizing the textile industry, of course
Over 15 Brand Partners will launch PrimaLoft Bio this fall. PrimaLoft Bio technology offers an answer to microplastics and a solution for the eventual end of life of the garment.
PrimaLoft, Inc., a leader in innovative materials technology, presents to end users an important step forward for environmental sustainability: PrimaLoft Bio “the first biodegradable, 100% recycled, high-performance synthetic insulation and fabric”. It does so in collaboration with more than 15 outdoor sports, fashion, lifestyle, and furniture brands.
“The massive use of plastic in our society has a huge impact on the environment due to the inability of the material to break and degrade over time,” stresses Mike Joyce, president and CEO of PrimaLoft. “PrimaLoft Bio is specifically designed to biodegrade in the environments where most plastics end up: landfills and ocean waters”. PrimaLoft Bio is made of high performance fibers made from 100% recycled materials (mainly plastic bottles) that biodegrade in specific environments such as landfills, oceans and wastewater. At the same time, insulation and fabric made with PrimaLoft Bio fibers guarantee the identical performance and high quality of products with virgin polyester fibers, offering warmth, lightness and protection for various activities and weather conditions.
Moreover, PrimaLoft Bio fibers are renewable in a circular economy as it is possible to regenerate them in new high performance materials, repeatedly, without any loss of quality.
When PrimaLoft Bio is exposed to oceanic water, wastewater or landfills, naturally occurring microbes break the fibers into their natural elements without leaving any harmful waste. The fibers will be transformed over time into water, CO2, methane, biomass and humus, a common component of soil. And PrimaLoft Bio will do it at a much higher speed than standard polyester. Under accelerated test conditions, PrimaLoft Bio fibers achieve almost complete biodegradation in less than two years, while standard polyester remains almost completely intact. In addition, PrimaLoft Bio insulation and fabric degrade only in these specific environments because its fibers are highly resistant. They will not break during use, neither in the washing machine nor in the closet, for the entire life of the garment.
