Reel Rock 2023

Reel Rock 2023, the film festival starting in Milan on Sept. 23

The Reel Rock 2023 short, medium and feature film festival is back. As always, climbing is the undisputed protagonist. There are even three feature films dedicated to the discipline in the 2023 edition: Burning The Flame, DNA and Resistance Climbing.

Three films exploring new perspectives on the relationship between man and rock. Stories of exploits and places that through the big screen seem to become unreachable. But also stories of friendships, loves, social affiliations. A carousel of emotions, as only the silver screen can paint it. All dedicated to the ever-growing community of climbers who never stop looking for the magic of rock, wherever it may be.

At Reel Rock 2023 the Jacopo Larcher and Barbara Zangerl’s account of the feat.

recount their free ascent of Eternal Flame. 650m elevation gain in 7c+ on the south face of Trango Tower, a 6240m in the Trango Group of Karakorum, Pakistan. One of the most complex routes above 6000, accessible are in a short time window due to unfavorable weather conditions. One of those unreachable peaks that you can’t stop dreaming about.

“Eternal Flame has always been a dream in the drawer for both of us. It is one of those iconic routes, opened and freed by true climbing legends, whose photos have made generations of climbers dream, among them of course us,” say Jacopo Larcher and Barbara Zangerl.

The pair of climbers, after studying and attempting the wall for several days, succeeded in closing the route in 24 pitches, completing a challenge that has dogged the world’s most experienced climbers.

“For years it seemed like something completely utopian, but as time went on, experience after experience, it began to seem more achievable. We set out with no expectations, only with the desire to venture into a new experience and visit a place that had always made us dream. Perhaps that was the key to success! The climb, especially in this style, was not only the realization of a dream, but a real surprise.”

The premiere screening of Burning The Flame will take place on Monday, September 25 at 9 p.m. in Milan at Cinema CityLife Anteo, in the Maestoso Room.
