Some tips for going out in the snow

Snow-capped mountains and sub-zero temperatures: for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, the winter season offers a unique experience.

More and more people are rediscovering the pleasures of simple hiking and snowshoeing in order to enjoy them to the full. These are outdoor activities that are within everyone’s reach, but still require the right clothing and equipment.

From feet to head: choosing a boot

There is nothing worse than cold and wet feet on a winter hike. The choice of the right footwear should never be underestimated, because snow and ice are no laughing matter. The footwear must be strong and light at the same time, capable of keeping your feet warm, dry and comfortable for hours. It must also guarantee maximum grip and stability on all types of terrain.

The Banks Winter model from Hanwag in Bavaria was specially developed for safe and warm winter outings. It is a lightweight boot that combines maximum comfort and safety on the ground with essential features for the cold season. These include the warming inner lining in Goretex Partelana and the higher cut of the upper, which prevents the entrance of snow and cold air. The model is made entirely in Europe using the glued-in technique and, like all Hanwag shoes, can be resole as needed for greater durability.

Layering – dressing in layers to stay warm

No matter how cold the wind blows or how high the snow is, Fjällräven will always find a way to stay outdoors. For the famous Swedish outdoor clothing brand, there is no such thing as the “off-season”. In fact, it’s precisely at this time of year, when the days get shorter, that Fjällräven believes it’s even more important to get outside, breathe in the crisp winter air and immerse yourself in nature. The important thing, however, is to be well prepared.

Dressing in layers is the quickest and easiest way to regulate your body temperature during winter activities. When going out in the snow, Fjällräven recommends wearing 3 to 4 layers: a first layer in contact with the skin, an insulating mid-layer, a breathable, light and functional shell, and a final reinforcing layer, worn over or under the shell jacket. The latter is especially necessary when it’s time for a break and extra warmth is needed.

The new models in the Expedition Series collection offer high-level features and functionality and provide unrivalled warmth. They can be worn over or under a shell jacket as a reinforcement layer and can be folded into their own internal pocket, taking up minimal space inside the pack. The outer fabric and lining are made of 100% recycled nylon. The padding is available, depending on the model, in certified goose down or in ultralight free-fibre insulation made from 100% recycled polyester.
