Game Hawker, Patagonia’s new film

The US company captures story of falconer Shawn Hayes on film

Patagonia FIlms presents Game Hawker starring Shawn Hayes, a falconer who fights every day for the conservation of birds of prey. The film by directors Brett Mate and Josh Izenberg is intended to make us think not only about bird training, but also about how birds can teach us to live in harmony with nature, its creatures and wild places. In the film, Shawn talks about his devotion to birds and his determination to save them from extinction. He also shows a side of his story that is not at all obvious: a tradition that often, like many others, has not been inclusive of people of colour.

But why does Patagonia tell us about falconry?
This tradition has played an important role in the history of Patagonia and Yvon Chouinard, its founder. Yvon was involved in the development of the Southern California Falconry Club in the early 1950s, and it was this discipline that introduced him to the world of climbing, because to reach these animals it was necessary to climb and rappel down the rocks. Perhaps we could say that without his passion for falconry and his respect for the creatures and nature that surrounds us, Patagonia would never have existed.
