Memories of David Lama – The fifth anniversary of the death of the famous Austrian mountaineer was commemorated
David Lama
, which occurred on April 16, 2019 in the Rocky Mountains together with fellow mountaineers Hansjörg Auer and Jess Roskelley.

Lama, along with his companions, was renowned for his cautious yet exceptional approach to mountaineering, representing a landmark in the modern mountaineering scenario. The incident that led to their demise aroused widespread international empathy.

In 2022, in Lama’s honor, his parents Claudia and Rinzi led an expedition to Nepal with the intent of creating a memorial for David. They chose the summit of Fox Peak, a place beloved by Lama for his acclimatization sessions, to place part of his ashes inside a chorten, a traditional Nepalese shrine, in a quiet region of Solu Khumbu bordering Tibet.

David Lama had left a significant imprint on the mountaineering world, with major achievements such as the first free ascent of Cerro Torre in Patagonia in 2012 and the solo ascent of Lunag Ri, a 6907-meter peak in Nepal, in 2018. These feats reinforced his status in the mountaineering world, until his tragic accident in 2019 while descending Howse Peak in Canada, where he and his companions were swept away by an avalanche.

These events underscore not only Lama’s daring and passion for mountaineering but also the deep connection to the mountains that lives on through the memorial established in his honor.
