A winter in the snow in complete safety:
The winter courses offered by the Ortovox Safety Academy and the new concept

Powder filled to the knees, one track all the way down the slope: ski mountaineering and freeriding in untracked terrain is a unique thrill. But in order to move safely away from the slopes, it is necessary to carry a well-assimilated body of knowledge. The mission of Ortovox, a Munich-based mountain sports specialist, is to protect mountaineers and the alpine environment. Therefore, in addition to developing innovative products, Ortovox is also committed to offering training courses.

The Ortovox Safety Academy, with its winter avalanche courses, is one of the world’s largest training initiatives supporting avalanche accident prevention and offers a comprehensive program of courses dedicated to the winter sports community.

For the 2023/24 season, the avalanche courses follow a new concept: skiers and female skiers can put into practice the theoretical knowledge learned during the courses by taking part in alpine outings in a choice of ski mountaineering or freeriding. Avalanche courses can be booked first.

The “Training Basic” course is aimed at both beginners and those who already have several seasons behind them and wish to refresh their knowledge. In a full day, proper handling of emergency equipment and the basics of avalanche search are explained.

The “Tour & Training Basic” course offers the opportunity to choose between a ski mountaineering outing or a freeride day. Certified mountain guides will explain to participants the basics of companion rescue, route planning and proper reading of avalanche bulletins. On the second day, the theoretical contents will be put into practice in the alpine environment.

The “Advanced Tour & Training” course is the right choice for those who have already gained some experience in the mountain environment and know the techniques of companion rescue. Over the course of two and a half days, advanced search strategies will be practiced during a ski mountaineering or freeriding outing, and avalanche behavior will be simulated. This avalanche course consists of a deepening of the knowledge already acquired, practicing to recognize potential danger spots and thus to foster complete autonomy during mountain outings during the winter season.

Ortovox Safety Academy courses can be booked here. The first one will start on December 9.
