The 23rd edition of the Mezzalama Trophy begins

The “Glacier Marathon” is about to begin! Saturday at 5:30 a.m. the 23rd edition of the Mezzalama Trophy, a ski mountaineering race featuring 208 teams of three elements each, will start from Breuil-Cervinia.

The competition will end in Gressoney-La-Trinité, after covering 45 kilometers and passing three four-thousand-meter peaks: the Castor (4126 m), the Lyskamm Nose and the Discovery Rock (4177 m).

Adriano Favre and the mountain guides engaged in the preparation of the route these days have done an immense amount of work. “The course is ready,” the technical director said, “today we managed to prepare all the most difficult parts. The contribution of about 20 centimeters of snow the day before yesterday was a not inconsiderable help in giving the glacier a wintry look. Snowfall is still expected between Thursday and Friday, and as a result we are confident that the original route will not be changed. Then the passage to Rif. Quintino Sella is confirmed by following the original tracks as written. The work of preparing and securing the course was immense and truly intense, the committed guides were dogged and delivered us an excellent race course. My recommendation for competitors is to follow all “rules of engagement” that will be communicated at the briefing and will be enforced during the race. At high altitudes, conditions are delicate, and it is imperative that all deliveries are met in order to make sure that the day runs as safely as possible.”

As for the Mezzalama Jeunes Trophy, which is dedicated to the U16, U18 and U20 youth categories, it will start at 8:30 a.m. in the Gabiet area, then continue to the Orestes Hut, the Colle della Salza and the Canalino dell’Aquila. The finish will be under the Mezzalama Trophy banner and will allow young skiers to experience a real race.

In this edition, the Mezzalama Trophy will also award the final points to decree the winners of the 2022-2023 biennium of the prestigious La Grande Course circuit. The standings see athlete Matteo Eydallin, of the Army Sports Center, in the lead, while Axelle Gachet Mollaret shares the top female position with Emily Harrop.

For those who cannot be present on site, the event will be streamed live from the

Mezzalama Trophy website

and on its social channels starting at 8:15 a.m.
