VAUDE completely eliminates PFAS from its production
VAUDE announced that it has eliminated the use of PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) in all of its products starting in 2021.
PFAS are hazardous chemicals that can accumulate in the environment and in humans, have harmful health effects and are potentially carcinogenic. Despite these long-known risks, few companies have voluntarily eliminated the use of PFASs, while VAUDE, by signing the Greenpeace Detox Commitment in 2016, has phased out the use of PFCs and PFASs in its production.
To remedy the problem ,the German government, along with four other countries, wants to restrict the entire group of PFAS substances in the EU by 2025. The restriction wants to limit all chemicals in this group by 2025, and VAUDE supports this, pointing out how legal regulations can cause industry to reconsider its position and accelerate innovation for the future. VAUDE demonstrates how it is possible to make functional outdoor products with water and dirt repellency without PFCs and PFASs, taking the path of increasingly sustainable and environmentally friendly production.
“We are glad that PFASs are finally restricted by law and that this issue has now reached the general public as well. It affects each of us, regardless of where we live in the world. At VAUDE, we have made a voluntary and long-standing commitment to this issue and have proven that environmentally friendly, PFAS-free outdoor gear and clothing is possible!” says Antje von Dewitz, CEO of VAUDE. Unfortunately, however, this is far from the standard. “Too little is being done on a voluntary basis. Therefore, legal regulations are important to prompt industry to reconsider its position and to promote the development of PFAS-free alternatives“, continued Antje von Dewitz.
