New Balance’s first trail bike with carbon plate intended for high rhythms to push through even technical terrain

New Balance Fuelcell SuperComp Trail

The first thing you notice is the streamlined, aerodynamic line, with a fit that could be described as tight but is not constricting or uncomfortable-a race shoe fit that is precise, secure and firm on the foot. The tread pattern is also quite narrow: the insole and outsole have similar widths, and the midsole does not widen much on the bottom, a functional feature on uneven terrain to maintain control. The overall structure of the shoe contributes to a lightweight feel to the foot, and the 36.5mm stack at the heel and 26.5mm stack at the forefoot provides an overall drop of 10mm. The 3D-textured mesh upper is strengthened at the toe by a minimalist yet protective internal reinforcement. External thermoplastic applications are minimized while the tongue distributes lacing pressure well. The low-density Fuelcell compound midsole is much softer and more compressible than other models, especially on top. The carbon plate, a true innovation, is thick and wide but better adaptable to the terrain than traditional slim trail plates. The plate and midsole are integrated with an Energy Arc structure with an arcuate geometry aimed at providing increased energy return during the rolling phase. The Vibram Megagrip Litebase sole is made of three pieces with multidirectional tread pattern and decent all-terrain grip.
