Patagonia’s new film on the environmental impacts of salmon farming: Laxaþjóð – A Salmon Nation

Patagonia has launched the documentary Laxaþjóð – A Salmon Nation, about the struggle to protect Iceland’s pristine waters and wild salmon from industrial farming in open nets. The documentary, a 27-minute short film, tells the story of the Icelandic community united in the defense of nature and wildlife. Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard expressed concern about the expansion of the farmed salmon industry, which threatens Iceland’s biodiversity and economy. The release of the documentary coincided with the proposal of a new aquaculture law in Iceland, sparking a wide public debate and the involvement of various environmental NGOs.

Salmon farms in Europe

Patagonia also highlights the expansion of salmon farms in Europe, with a particular concentration in Norway, Scotland and Ireland. The company, through its global Artifishal campaign, has raised the alarm about the risk of extinction of wild salmon due to the impact of fish hatcheries in the ocean. With the doc Laxaþjóð – A Salmon Nation, Patagonia urges the Icelandic government to ban new open net salmon farms and phase out existing ones. The campaign is supported by local and European NGOs, as well as public figures such as artist Björk, who donated proceeds from her song Oral to support the cause.
