Patagonia: The Meaningless Pursuit Of Snow

Patagonia presents its latest film: a fascinating exploration of the lives of skiers and snowboarders searching for their place in the snow.

The practice of powder skiing may seem meaningless at first glance, but all over the world many people devote their lives to this activity. “The Meaningless Pursuit of Snow” tells the story of five individuals deeply immersed in the culture of ski mountaineering and snowboarding. These enthusiasts overcome language barriers and bridge generational gaps, proving that their passion is universal.

Sweetgrass Productions directors Michael James Brown, Nick Waggoner and Zac Ramras share their experience behind the camera, “All the energy we have devoted in pursuit of the wild snow of ski mountaineering is embodied in ‘Meaningless,’ an extension of this obsession enriched by curiosity and a lingering question: what meaning can be found by pursuing something seemingly meaningless?”

During the making of the film, an extraordinary event occurred: the in-depth exploration of a beloved life. Questions were asked of individuals with unique stories, revealing why they start plowing snow and what makes them want to do it again and again, even after more than 35 years in the mountains. As the filmmakers state, snow continues to be a constant teaching.

“The Meaningless Pursuit of Snow” features a cast of characters who are diverse but united by a deep culture of ski mountaineering that can overcome any language and generational barriers. All of these individuals are searching for the same essentials: a connection to nature, the thrill of challenge, and the search for community in the mountains they consider home.
